Remington was born in New York in 1861 to parents who owned hardware stores and had emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine in the early 1700s. Another painting that features horses, Remington's great grandfather, was a saddle maker by trade, and the Remingtons were actually fine horsemen. Not the only famous artist in the family, did you know that bloodlines related Frederic Remington to Indian portrait artist George Catlin and cowboy sculptor Earl W. Bascom?
